Saleemah Y. Fahmi, MD, is a solo-practicing Endocrinologist at Endocrinology Associates of Southwest Dallas in Texas. Dr. Fahmi earned her medical degree at New York University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in internal medicine and fellowship in endocrinology at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
Dr. Fahmi’s interest and research in endocrinology and cardiovascular metabolism began early in her education. While attending Florida A&M University, she began working in the research labs of Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in Groton, Connecticut. Her focus was bench research searching for novel adipocyte genes. Her interest in endocrinology and cardiovascular disease continued while she attended New York University School of Medicine. After completing medical school and residency, she continued research in the field of lipid metabolism in the Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Texas Southwestern. As a part of the Dallas Heart Study, she focused her research on the metabolic difference in human subjects with mutations in NPC1L1, a protein that allows the intestine to absorb dietary cholesterol. She has authored or coauthored articles published in such peer-reviewed journals as Human Molecular Genetics, Clinical Diabetes, and the Journal of Clinical Rheumatology.
Dr. Fahmi was board-certified in internal medicine–endocrinology in 2007. Upon completing her fellowship, Dr. Fahmi established her own practice in the community where she was raised. The high prevalence of obesity and diabetes has motivated her to remain in southern Dallas to continue her work. She has a special interest in the treatment of childhood obesity, the detection of early diabetes, and the prevention of diabetes in at-risk youth and young adults. She believes that education, empowerment, and early intervention are crucial to decreasing the prevalence of diabetes. Through her work at her practice and in the community, Dr. Fahmi strives to have a positive impact on as many as she reasonably can.
In her free time Dr. Fahmi enjoys fitness, playing the cello and spending time with her two children.
